Norwegian cast iron since 1853. Jøtul is the oldest name on our floor and the one people walk in asking for by name — usually because they saw one at a relative’s house that had been running for thirty years and still looked good.

Jøtul is a heating line first and a good-looking one second, which is an unusual order of priorities and the reason it has lasted since 1853.
Cast iron wood stoves
Freestanding, radiating from every surface. Cast iron takes longer to come up to temperature than steel and then gives that heat back slowly for hours after the fire has died down — which is exactly what you want overnight.
Wood inserts
The same cast iron construction, built to slide into the masonry fireplace you already own. It seals the open firebox and turns a decorative hole in the wall into something that will actually hold a fire and heat the room.
Gas stoves
The look and the build without the firewood. If you love the shape of a cast iron stove but have no interest in hauling logs and shovelling ash, this is the way to get one.
Enamel finishes
Beyond matte black, Jøtul is known for porcelain enamel colors — deep blues, greens and ivories. It is the detail that makes a stove read as a piece of furniture in the room rather than as an appliance parked against a wall.
Why we carry Jøtul.
It is the most expensive wood line on our floor, and we will say plainly that it is not the right answer for every customer. For the people it is right for, nothing else comes close.
- Cast iron behaves differently. Slower to heat, far slower to cool. If you are genuinely heating with wood rather than lighting the occasional fire, that thermal mass is the whole argument.
- Since 1853. Jøtul has been building stoves in Norway for over 170 years. Very few companies in any industry can say that, and it shows in how resolved the designs are.
- They look like furniture. The enamel finishes and the castings are the reason people put these in living rooms they care about instead of hiding them in a basement.
- They outlive their owners’ houses. We service Jøtuls older than some of the people who call us about them. Gaskets and glass are wear items; the castings are not.
- Supported in North America. Jøtul has long-standing North American operations, so parts and service backing are real rather than theoretical.

What makes Jøtul different from other wood stoves?
Cast iron and heritage. Jøtul has been building stoves in Norway since 1853, and builds in cast iron rather than folded steel plate. Cast iron is slower to come up to temperature but holds and radiates heat long after the fire has burned down, and the enamel finishes read as furniture rather than as an appliance.
Is cast iron actually better than a steel stove?
It is different rather than automatically better, and we will not pretend otherwise. Steel heats up faster, which suits a quick evening fire. Cast iron is slower to warm but stays warm far longer, which suits anyone genuinely heating with wood. If budget is the deciding factor, Osburn gives you more heat per dollar; if you want the stove to be part of the room, Jøtul wins.
Can a Jøtul insert go into my existing fireplace?
In most cases, yes, provided the masonry firebox and chimney are sound. The insert seals the open firebox and converts it into a closed heater, and you keep the mantel and surround you already have. We measure the opening and check the chimney on site before quoting anything.
Does Jøtul make gas stoves too?
Yes — cast iron gas stoves in the same style, for people who want the look and the build without handling firewood. Ask us what is currently available, since the range changes.
Do you service Jøtul stoves you did not sell?
Yes, and we see plenty of them. These stoves routinely outlive whoever installed them. Gaskets, glass and baffles are normal wear items on any wood stove and are usually straightforward to replace — bring us the model off the data plate. More on our service page.
